Drowning in snow

Snow, more, more, more and more snow,,,,,,,,,, a singsong that Katla has been singing the past few days, but isn‘t it enough already? I don‘t think there has seldom, if ever, been this much snow since the Horse Centre Söðulsholt opened. Not just these high snow drifts, but also this thick layer of snow everywhere, especially on the riding trails and in the farm driveway, and it is getting quite problematic to get outside for a nice riding trip.

We have to use a bulldozer, no less, to move most of the snow out of the way, but decided this morning to try and pack the snow in the driveway, rather than create a snow tunnel, which closes up again and again. It worked, at least, today and it will be interesting to see whether we can come and go tomorrow. It would have been fun to have kept a record to see how often we have gotten stuck in our car (4x4) these past few weeks. The bulldozer also went a few trips down our riding trails, after which a small number of the horses were driven on a small exercise trip. We have also been studying the stallion cd from the National Horse Show and we have been thinking and re-thinking which stallions to use next summer. Arður from Brautarholti is a favorite and we are also waiting to see which stallions will be placed with Hroessvest next summer.

Reiðnámskeið

Depending on sufficient participation, we intend to hold a riding course the weekend of January 28-29. Instructor will be Sölvi Sigurðsson, who has, among other things, taught riding classes at the University at Hólar.

This are private lessons, 2 x 20 minutes per day per person and it is recommended that participants listen to and attend the private lessons of other parcipants during the course. The weekend costs kr. 18.000 and included is boarding for the horse, coffee and refreshments, but we ask that participants bring their own lunch boxes. Participants are welcome to make use of the cooking facilities located in the tea room of the stables/riding hall. For registration and further information please call 8995625 or send an e-mail to sodulsholt@sodulsholt.is

White everywhere

Christmas snow is coming down in spades these days and we only hope that it won‘t disappear just before Christmas and who know, maybe we could blow the dust of the snowmobiles, which are quite dusty as they haven‘t been touched the past few years due to lack of snow.

Went to check on the breeding mares and the young ones today, which appear to do be doing nicely. We have seen some rainrot, even down their legs, most likely due to all the rain we have had. A number of the horses have pastern dermatitis (Scratches) and have rainrot up their legs, so we urge people to closely monitor their horses.

These 4 mares are all born 2009, the first one is sired by Hóf from Varmalæk, the brown mare is sired by Bruni from Skjólbrekka, the chestnut one, that is now turning grey in due time, is sired by Klettur from Hvammi and the one with the blaze is sired by Kjarni from Þjóðólfshaga. A very interesting group this one ;0)

Spring in the air

The weather has been incredible the past few days, one might think it is May rather than November, and the only complaint we might have is all the rain that pours now and then, leaving everything quite muddy. We certainly wouldn‘t mind a few dry days, if only to be able to collect all the barley straw that is still lying in the acre fields.

Some of the horses are getting quite good and we will be adding a few more horses to the Horses for sale page in the very near future. Took a few pictures of some of the horses at the beginning of the week. First are the pictures of the two sisters foaled by Gloria from Snartartunga, the brown one a 4 winters old sired by Dynur from Hvammur and the bay with the blaze a 3 winters old mare sired by Sólon from Skáney.

The chestnut horse, ridden by Arnar, is Spyrna from Skáney, a 4 winters old sired by Eiður from Oddholi and the other chestnut is Eldur from Krossholt, sired by Glym from Hítarnes.

Last week we sadly experienced the loss of one of our breeding mares, Sunnu from Akri, a 1st price 4 gaited mare sired by Roði from Múli. We noticed that she wasn‘t with her herd and started looking for her. We found her alive in a ditch, although she was very cold. When we got her out of the ditch we put her straight into the horse trailer and drove her to the stables where the veterinarian was alreay waiting for us. Everything was tried to get her going again, but unfortunately we were not successful and she died during the night. It is very hard to see such a fine mare pass in addition to having lost another 1st prize mare less than a year ago. Sunna was 13 winters old and pregnant by Kapal from Komma, and we have 4 horses foaled by her: a mare sired by Gígjar, the stallion Ábóti, sired by Álfur, a horse sired by Húmvar from Hamrahól and a mare sired by Sigur from Hólabaki.

Picture: Sunna‘s two oldest offsprings, Nótt from Komma and Ábóti from Söðulsholt.

Two promising mares for sale.

Fluga from Söðulsholt IS2007237859

Foaled by our pace mare Þyrla from Söðulsholt, 1st prize for riding abilities and sired by Léttfeti from Söðulsholt, who was sired by Adam from Ásmundarstaðir.

Fluga is an interesting and fun mare, willful, trustworthy/sure and has good gaits. She is a fine riding horse material, big and good looking.

Sóley from Söðulsholt IS2008237388

Sired by Sólon from Skáney and Pyngja from Syðra-Skörðugil, a 1st prize mare for riding abilities with a total score of 7,88. Sóley has been trained for one month and is very promising, moves using tölt and trot with a great disposition.

Oktober news

Well, we are back in full force after our vacation in Setpember. About 30 hroses are inside and a very diverse group it is, 0). We have started to work with our 3 year olds and they are looking good. Maybe not a very large group, but Söðulsholt owns 3 colts and 1 filly, sons of Hágangur, Álfur and Roði and an acquired filly from Fáskrúðarbakka, sired by Guðfinnur of Innri-Skeljabreeku. Iðunn and Dóri own two fillies, sired by Sólon from Skáney. All these young horses are looking good, but the sons of Álfur and Roði are the winners, at least for the time being.

Picture: Sleipnir from Söðulsholt, son of Roði, and Ábóti, son of Álfur, after 3 weeks of training

Arnar Ásbjörnsson has come back to work for us and will be joining us on our rides this winter. The 3 year olds will probably be released to their pastures in November and shortly thereafter we will be taking in „special“ horses and we don‘t think there have ever been so many interesting and good horses on their way inside.

Picture: Röðull from Söðulsholt

The club Snæfellingur held a foal show on Sunday and we entered three foals in the competition. The show went well and Röðull from Söðulsholti placed second, which made us very happy. Röðull is sired by Ábóti from Söðulsholt and Lipurtá from Söðulsholt. We aim to hold a foal show here at Söðulsholt in the middle of January, to be further advertised a bit later.

Initial training course

Two weekend course held at Söðulsholt:
On 29.-30. October and 12.-13. November

Instructor: Guðmundur M. Skúlason, trainer and instructor FT

DThe fall is a good time to begin the initial horse training. Each participant will bring two untrained horses to the course and will work with them both weekends. All participants will receive homework to work with in between the weekends. Material covered during the course includes: Behaviour of the horse (How does the horse think?) Leadership role (what can you get the horse to do?) Preparation for initial training (We don‘t complete secondary school exams while in the first grade!) Initial training is an excellent basis for good training the horses‘ way.

Two academic hours (same time for all participants), 8 practical hourse per participant. Summary and conclusion at the end of each day day where the day‘s work is discussed and questions are answered It is expected that all participants attend all hours, including the hourse where other participants are at work, to observe the various types of horses and how they react differently. This way participants will benefit the most from this course. The course costs 19.000 per person and included is stabling of the horses from Friday through Sunday.

For registration please call :7702025 (Guðmundur) or send an e-mail to: mummi@hallkelsstadahlid.is

Finally! A pinto filly :)

Finally, all foals due this year at Söðulsholt have been born. Neither Rebekka nor Gerpla were pregnant when they came back from the stallions in September of last year, but they were ready for mating and so we decided to try and put them with Ábóti from Söðulsholt, who impregnated them both. We have regretted our decision a bit this summer to have placed them so late and we were hoping a bit for an early delivery. But our wishes were ignored. However, we are very pleased with the results. Gerpla presented us with a beautiful colt, named Baron, and finally, a pinto filly owned by Söðulsholt, foaled by Rebekka from Krókur. A beautiful little pinto filly, chestnut head, with a blaze and a small chestnut spot on one side right at the groin area. Gerpla will not be placed again this summer, but as we were so happy with our new pinto filly, we decided to put Rebekka with Sólon from Skáney and hope that she will quickly become pregnant and deliver at bit early next year, perhaps at the beginning of Augut ;0).

Late summer show at Miðfossar

Dóri presented three mares at the breeding show at Miðfossar and it went very well. Kolfreyja from Snartartunga achieved 1st prize. Kolfreyja is a 7 year mare sired by Parker from Sólheimar and Gloría from Snartartunga. Gloría has given has very good horses and this is the second mare foaled by her that receives 1st prize. Gloría passed last year but we still have some very intersting horses foaled by her. A 5 winter old horse sired by Borði from Fellskot, a 4 winter old mare sired by Dynur from Hvammi, a 3 winter old bay mare with a star sired by Sólon from Skáney and a 2 winter old filly sired by Hóf from Varmalækur.

Nasa is Hildur‘s first offspring that is trained by us, but we also have a 2 winter old mare foaled by Hildur and sired by Kjarni from Þjóðólfshagi, and a 1 winter old filly sired by Sólon from Skáney which achieved 3rd place in the foal show this past winter. Hildur foald a bay colt this summer, sired by Þristur from Fet. Hildur is now pregnant by Hákon from Ragnheiðarstaðir.

Faxagleði 2011

We took 4 horses with us to the open Faxagleði meet, which is held annually at Miðfossar. Þyrla participated in 150 m pace competition and placed second. Dóri competed with Kolskeggur from Snartartunga in the men‘s category, where they made to the finals and ended up in fifth place. This was Kolskeggur's‘first competition, who is 5 winters old sired by Borði from Fellskoti and Gloría from Snartartunga.

Einar‘s grandchildren participated for the first time in the children‘s competition outdoors and did very well. Inga Dís attended with her own Bliki and placed third and Róbert placed fourth on his Skjóni. Katla competed in the young children‘s category on Þyrla and for once was very happy with her dad who ran the course in record time ;0)

Farmers‘ ride 2011

The annual farmers‘ ride was held this past Saturday, hosted by Einar of Söðulsholt, Auðun of Rauðkollsstaðir and Steinn Logi of Hrútsholt. The ride began at Skógarnes, where we rode along and around the beach at Skógarnes, guided by Trausti of Skógarnes.

We were unbelievably lucky with the weather, as the weather forecast for the whole week had predicted nothing but rain. Just before the weekend, the forecast changed and we got sunshine and mild weather and, instead of rain, we got a bit of ash so that for a while we barely saw the mountains.

After the ride, a delicious feast awaited us, prepared and served by Óli from Eldborg, so that nobody went home hungry og thirsty. We want to thank everyone for a great day and especially Guðríður and Trausti of Skógarnes.

We have added a number of pictures of the farmers‘ ride to the Söðulsholt Facebook page. Click here.

Here you can view a short video depicting the day

Pictures from the National Championship

We had two mares competing in B category at the National Championship, Ösp from Krókur and Kolfreyja from Snartartungu. They did both very well and received a score of around 8.30.

Ösp is 9 winters old, sired by Þorri from Þúfa and Skrýtla from Skarð. Although she is already 9 winters old, this is only the fourth meet she has competed in. Iðunn had just begun to compete on her this spring and they won the women‘s category in the Skuggi open meet, placed third in the prequalification at Skuggi and the weekend prior to the National Championship they were in the A finals in Búðardal.

Kolfreyja from Snartartungu is 7 winters old, sired by Parker from Sólheimar and Gloría from Snartartungu. This was, I believe, the fifth time she competes in the outside arena and the previous times she always ended in the finals. We intend to present them again in breeding shows this fall and will then keep them inside for the winter.

More foals

The foals have come one after the other in the past few weeks. This year‘s foaling has gone very well and we are very satisfied with what we got so far. Only two mares have yet to foal,
Rebekka from Krókur and Gerpla from Laugarstein, but they are not due until August/September.

On June 10 Píla from Brún foaled a bay horse, sired by Fláki from Blesastaðir. Píla has since gone to Hákon from Ragnheiðarstaðir.

On June 17 Pyngja from Syðra-Skörðugili foaled a chestnut filly with a blaze, sired by Fláki from Blesastaðir, an interesting coincidence, as Pyngja also foaled on June 17 last year, also a chestnut filly with a blaze. Pyngja also went to Hákon from Ragnheiðarstaðir.

On June 24 Fjóla from Árbær foaled a chestnut colt with a blaze, also sired byFláki. Fjóla then went to Arður from Brautarholt for stud services.

On June 27, Vona from Söðulsholt foaled a chestnut filly, sired by Arður from Brautarholt.

On June 28 Kórína from Akureyri foaled a brown pinto filly, sired by Ábóti from Söðulsholt.

On July 6 Blæja from Svignaskarð foaled a red dun colt with a star and white ring around pupil, sired by Álfur from Selfoss. Blæja will be going to Fláki from Blesastaðir for stud services.

On July 13 Kolbrún from Kjarnholt foaled a brown colt, sired by Ábóti from Söðulsholt.

We may not forget our new mare Donna from Krókur, but she went to Krákur from Blesastaðir for stud services.

Three mares, Lipurtá, Abbadís and Sunna from Akur were picked up from West Húnavatnssýsla, all successfuly impregnated by Kapall from Komma a three year old brown pinto, sired by Álfur. Kapall and Kappi from Komma have the same Dam.

Ábóti offsprings

An incredible case of writer‘s block has been going on the past few weeks, as the computer and photshop have been on strike. The blockage is now lifting and the writer‘s tools are coming back into action and so we will be posting quite a number of news items in the near future.

We start by adding 3 pictures of beautiful filly foals, all sired by our very own Ábóti from Söðulsholt, and we are very happy with the foals sired by Ábóti that we have seen so far. Lightly built and soft and supple gaits. But if you visit our facebook page, you will see more pictures of them.

Click here to enter Söðulsholt‘s facebook page

Ábóti is now in a paddock at Hrossholti along with 10 mares. If you are interested, additional mares can join him there. The cost is ISK 40.000 all inclusive.

Ábóti‘s first offsprings

Still more foals have joined the group of foals as on May 20 Bára from Syðra-Skörðugil foaled a bay pinto colt with white ring around pupils. Yesterday evening a chestnut colt with a star was foaled by Lipurtá from Söðulsholt. Both foals were sired by the son of Álfur, Ábóti from Söðulsholt. It has been very windy and cold this past week and so both foals spent their first few hours in the riding hall in order to dry and stay warm.

11.05.11

More foals

Still more foals have joined the group of foals as on May 20 Hildur from Sauðárkrókur foaled a bay colt, sired by Þristur from Fet, early this morning. However, we do forgive Hildur, at least this time, as the colt is very handsome and did not have a problem with posing while only a few hours old. Hildur will most likely be serviced by Hákon from Ragnheiðarstaðir and it will be interesting to see the outcome of that pairing.

06.05.11

Future riders!

We received a funfilled visit yesterday when the children from the Kindergarten at Laugagerði came to Söðulsholt. They all got to groom a horse, were shown how to clean the horse‘s hooves, how to saddle a horse and finally they got to ride while being led by adults. The children‘s reactions were varied, some were used to horses, some had never sat on a horse and some just pinched their noses and said that they didn‘t like the smell. But they all sat a horse this day and all did very well.

Summer has arrived!!

The first foal of the summer has finally arrived, as Abbadís from Söðulsholt foaled this morning and gave us a filly sired by Glymur from Innri-Skeljabrekka. We are not yet certain of the color, possibly dun, but her mane is very silvery, so who knows.

We are pretty sure though that with the first foal the summer is finally here, or at least we hope so, as the weather the past few days and weeks has been disgusting and I don‘t it has been this wet around here for a very long time. More pictures of the foal can be seen on our facebook page and you can click here to access our facebook page.

14.04.11

Maternity ward

It won‘t be long now for the first foal to be born as the first mare should foal as early as next week and 3 mares will foal in May. It is difficult to tell whether or which one will speed up or delay the delivery. We have brought 3 mares that should be the first ones to foal to the pasture closest to the stables where they can be checked upon daily.

The rest of the mares will be brought closer to the stables as their time to foal draws closer as last years foals are still with them, although some of the mares have already started to wean them off. We aim to take the foals away from the mares after the weekend, keep them in the stables for a few days and teach them to be led by a rope and some other things.

The ladies in the picture above are Lipurtá from Söðulsholt, carrying a foal sired by the son of Álf
Ábóti from Söðulsholt. Hildur from Sauðárkrókur, foal sired by Þristur from Fet and then there is Abbadís from Söðulsholt carrying a foal sired by Glymur from Innri-Skeljabrekka.

Riding clinic

The riding clinic with Benni Líndal has now been completed. The clinic was great and very educational and here are some pictures from last weekend.

Birna Tryggvadóttir has been the instructor in the rider badge system course this past winter. There were 8 students this spring who took the test for the third rider badge and they all passed.
We are working on offering a riding course for children and teenagers, which we will advertise when we have found an available weekend to hold the course.

Askur

Here is a promising horse with great colouring, Askur from Hríshóli 1. Born in 2007, sired by Glymur from Innri-Skeljabrekka and Embla from Hæringsstaðir. Ask‘s owner is Vilberg Þráinsson, farmer at Hríshól in Reykhólasveit.

Dreamhall !!

The new stabels in Hafnarfjörður is ready and open and, as can be seen in the pictures, it is truly an magnificent stable. The construction began in May and the going was slow until the end of last year, at which time the speed changed and construction continued at full speed. Horses are now being brought to their new stables and it will obviously be a joy for the riders to go on riding tours from this new place.

The stable‘s surface area is about 700 square metres, 16 single horse stalls and 10 two horse stalls. The two horse stalls are 3x3 metres and the single horse pens are 1.85x3 metres. A barn (107 square metres) for hay and straw is at one end of the building. On the lower floor there is also a large tackroom, a closetroom for outdoor coats and bathroom. Upstairs there is a 45 square metres kitchen/sitting area, with a balcony, a large locker room and a full bathroom. The stalls are deep bedding stalls, 30 cm deep and straw bedding is used. The stable offers a nice area for shoeing the horses and to bathe them. The entire lot is about 1.800 square metres, with car parking at one side of the house and large outdoor fenced-in corral for the horses on the other side of the house.

Plenty to do

We received new pictures of Hákon yesterday and he looks very good, almost too good to be true. The annual general meeting is only a few days away and we can hardly wait to see Hákon with our own eyes. There are more pictures of Hákon on our Facebook page.

The riding clinic with Benni continues and the second weekend course was held last weekend. It is hard to believer, but this is the first time a riding course is held at Söðulsholt where part of the course is held outside and not in the riding hall. The participants got to run with the horses a few times up and down the farm road and it was easy to spot those who had not been attending the gym this past winter. We lucked out wheatherwise as there have not been many days like this in the winter, sunny, snow and absolutely no wind.

On Friday evening we had a tölt event at Söðulsholt, which was held by the ridinng club Snæfelling. The event went very well and it isn‘t unlikely that additional and similar events will be held here in the future. Here are pictures of the participants and the spectators.

The breeding

There are not many horses currently in the stables that are owned by Söðulsholt. This is both because we have been busy training for third parties and because the Söðulsholt breeding is still in the growing stage. There are now only 3 mares, 4 to 6 winters old, in the stables that are owned by Söðulsholt and they are all promising. We took some pictures of the girls this week and more pictures of them can also be found on the Söðulsholt facebook page.

Nótt from Komma, 4 winters old, sired by Gígjar from Auðsholtshjáleiga and Sunna from Akur. Söðulsholt acquired Sunna 2007 along with Nótt, at which time she was only a few months old. Nótt is Sunna‘s first offspring.

Tígla from Söðulsholt, 5 winters old, sired by Fákur from Auðsholtshjáleiga and Kolbrún from Kjarnholti. Tígla is Kolbrún‘s first offspring that is being trained here at Söðulsholt

Then there is Nasa from Söðulsholt, 6 winters old, sired by Parker from Sólheimar and Hildur from Sauðárkrókur, and Nasa is also Hildur‘s first offspring.

Hákon and Sægaumur

The two young stallions, partially owned by Söðulsholt and being trained by Elli and Viðja in Langholt, continue to impress us.

Picture: Viðja Hrund Hreggviðsdóttir and Sægaumur from Eyjakot

It is probably not often that the magazine Mannlíf (human life) discusses stallions in their magazine, but in the latest issue Mannlíf has included an article about Sægaumur and his owners.

Picture: Erlingur Erlingsson and Hákon from Ragnheiðarstaðir

It won‘t be long until the annual general meeting of the Hákoncompany and it will be interesting to follow his advances in training and development. In the meantime we‘ll have to settle for this picture of the stallion, although we are pretty sure that there are not many show pictures of 4 winter old horses.

Finally, a few new pictures and more to come soon.

This is Fjöður from Ólafsvík, born 2007, sired by Mars from Ragnheiðarstaðir and Perla from Einifell. Below, in older news, there are pictures of her after a 3 week training period this last fall. She came back to us about a month ago. She shows promise and is a very mature mare for her age.

Riding course

Do you have a problem with your horse????
Is your horse nervous, stiff, lazy, uncooperative using the bridle, doesn‘t want to trot or tölt, does he not give a clear tölt, or jumps up on one leg, do you want to increase or decrease the tölt speed, gallop or add agility exercises???? Whatever the problem is, there is guaranteed a solution to the problem ;0) We are lucky in that the one and only Magnús Lárusson will be holding a riding course here at Söðulsholt on February 12-13. The course is both for less and more advanced riders, beginners and professionals and it is certain that Maggi will have answers and advice on all problems relating to the horses.

The course cost is ISK 20.000 and included is stabling for the horses during the weekend, lunch, coffee and refreshments. The course is taught in groups of 4 and each group receives 4 instruction sessions and two academic lesson hours during the weekend.

Stallion ownership

Söðulsholt partially owns three young, well bred stallions, all very promising, at least until proven otherwise; 0). The three are:
Kapall from Komma,

Kapall frá Kommu

Kapall is born in 2008, sired by Álfur from Selfoss and Kjarnorka from Komma, who is also the dam of Kappa and Kasper from Komma.
Hákon from Ragnheiðarstaðir:

Hákon frá Ragnheiðarstöðum

Hákon is born 2007 also sired by Álfur from Selfoss and Hátíð from Úlfsstaðir. Then there is Sægaumur from Eyjarkot born 2008 sired by Gaumur from Auðsholsthjáleiga and Folda from Vogar.

Sægaumur frá Eyjarkoti

Sægaumur and Hákon are both bein trained by Elli and Viðja in Langholt, and it will be interesting to see their progress this spring. Einar and other owners of Sægaum visited Sægaum this past Saturday and they were very satisfied with what they saw. A photographer from the magazine Mannlíf accompanied them and took pictures of both horse and people and will the accompanying article perhaps be published in the next issue.

Sheepdog (obedience) course

The riding hall can obviously be used for a number of events as yesterday Gísli from Mýrdal and Svanur from Dalsmynni held a sheepdog course for sheepfarmers of Dalir. This is not the first time the riding hall has been used to conduct sheepdog courses and it seems to be working out rather well.

More pictures from the sheepdog course can be seen at Dalsmynni‘s website: http://dalsmynni.123.is/blog/

Foal show on January 29

We are currently working on the winter program and additional events will probably be added in due time. The rider badge system courses continue, our foal show will be held on January 29, a riding clinic with Maggi Lár will probably be held in February and we also lucked out in engaging Binni Líndal to hold a 3 weekend long riding clinic in March, which will be further advertised a bit later.
